"Children are our future - teach them well and let them lead the way".
There is a famous quote from some Greek philosopher I think that says something along the lines of "you can judge a society by the way it protects its weakest members" and that is true.
How we protect the weakest and most vunerable members of our society - the young, the elderly and the infirm - reflects on who we are as a people. If we can cast off those whom cannot protect themselves, if we fail to care and nurture them, if we fail to give them a proper place, then we have failed as a society.
With our children, if we fail to protect them, by law and by action, then how can they know, as they get to adulthood, what is right and wrong? If neglected, how can we expect them to reach their full potential? And where are we in twenty or thirty years time when these children are grown? If we fail in education we allow our nation to fall behind. If we fail them in health then we have a greater drain in future years on the health system. What we fail to care for today becomes tomorrow's problem.

I think the point that I would emphasize in an essay on this subject is the the fact that children who are not protected (in various ways) grow to be unhealthy adults. Abused children are much more likely to have drug and alcohol problems, difficulty in work situations because they are not able to socialize, or mental illness. Children who are exposed to violence often grow to be violent adults, and the cycle repeats itself. If you are referring to protecting children in smaller ways, such as not cursing around them, I think it has more to do with tradition and community values. Children are the essence of innocence, and people (most, anyway) want to preserve that trait in kids.

Children need protecting from all types of sources .. ie unsuitable films .. strangers..A child is more likely unable to make a correct judgement and are niave therefore as we are adults who are making choices for our children we have to protect them in order to ensure they have a healthy childhood and where they are nutured correctly to enable them to have developed standards .. difference between right and wrong etc which prepares them for a healthy transition into wider society and gives them the guidelines for their own children

Well, we're not going to write you're essay for you, but here's some hints: children are born innocent and pure. This undoubtedly changes as they grow older and are exposed to the "real world", but we need to keep them sheltered from it as much as possible in their younger days, or risk them possibly becoming traumatized or having emotional issues or social disorders. Because they are very impressionable (monkey see, monkey do), we need to be good role models for them. This will give them a good example of how to live and what kinds of choices to make. Basically, children aren't stupid or anything, they just aren't developed enough to make a lot of decisions themselves yet. We, as mature and capable adults, need to do our best to ensure their emotional and physical safety so they can grow up to become full functioning, normal people in society.
