Many, with the largest amount being locked up in the lithosphere (about 20 000 000 000 tonnes) in such rocks as limestone. Limestones chemical composition is CaCO3. Limestone is largely composed of reef building organisms, hence reefs are so important. The rest of the carbon is in Coal and Oil (10 000 000 tonnes), Oceans (35 000 000 tonnes) Dead organic matter (3 700 000 tonnes), Terrestrial organisms (550 000 tonnes) and and a small amount in ocean plants and sediments.
