It's got to be Sourav Ganguly. You only have to look at India's performance during his captaincy to notice this. When he was captain, he lead India to 21 test victories, the most that any captain has ever managed. The best thing of all is that after 50 years, he helped India to win both the Test and ODI series against Pakistan in Pakistan. We also won a series in Australia thanks to him.
Usually a captain's own performances deteriorate when they're a captain too. Ganguly's did too, but he still managed a good average in Tests despite this. If you look our current captain, Dravid, I think he is an incredible player too, but the team hasn't been doing as well under his lead. Plus, the recent World Cup failure will mostly blamed on Dravid even though it shouldn't be. In contrast, Ganguly will be praised for getting India to the finals in 2003 World Cup.
Overall, Ganguly has been the best because he was a passionate captain who was ready to get into arguments or stand up for himself and the team. I liked this assertiveness from him, as it showed strength and confidence.

not more than 3 players in the team should be the captain in the past or present. its makes clash of ideas less.
this once happened in the pakistani team 9 of 11 were captains (former or present) the team suffered a lot at that time.

at present......i gess sourav ganguly.....i mean dravid has jus made the team worse.......rememba wc 2003.....we were in the finals....and gess under hu....sourav ganguly.......he wz jus humiliated becuz of greg chappel......and wat has he dun to this team.....MADE IT A BUNCH OF LOSERS!!!
