If a ball weighing 2.2kg is released from rest and drops 93mm onto a mass(5.7kg) which is at rest and is supported by a spring.

If the coefficient of restitution for impact is 0.93, what is the maximum deflection downwards of the mass.??

oh and spring constant is 654N/m,
(remember, the spring will initially be compressed, due to the force from the weight of the block.!!)

The work the spring does in bringing the ball to a stop is (2.2)(9.80665)(0.093) = 2.00644059 J = (1/2)(654)(∆x)^2
∆x = 6.1359 mm

The spring was already deflected (5.7)(9.80665)/654 = 79.01995 mm

Total deflections is 85.15586 mm
