The Newtonian reflector is the most popular type of amateur telescope. Because it has a single figured surface, it is the most economical telescope. Newtonians are used mostly for visual observing, though some astrophotographers use them also. Commercially available amateur Newtonians range from three to thirty inches in aperture.

The term reflector covers all types of telescopes using mirrors to form an image. This includes compound designs such as the Cassegrain, and less common designs like the shiefspiegler.
