solve for your favorite side, a or b.

The Pythagorean theorem states that for a right triangle,
a^2 + b^2 = c^2

where a and b are the sides and c is the hypotenuse, so solve for a

a^2 = c^2 - b^2

a would be equal to the square root of c^2 - b^2

Pythagorean Theorem A^2 + B^2 = C^2 (4)^2 + (6)^2 = C^2 16 + 36 = c^2 52 = C^2 √52 = C

a2 + b2 = c2

for ex. if 6 was b and c was 10
it would be
a2 + 36 = 100
-36 -36

a2 = 64
and then square root 64 to get rid of the squared a
and so a would be 8

(the 2s represent squared.)

in the theorem it is a^2 + b^2 = C^2. You would need to subtract b^2 from both sides and that should give you a^2.

a^2=C^2 - b^2

Pythagorens theorem is
hypothenese square=oneside square +otherside square
therefore
other side square = hypotenuse - oneside

So pythageroean theorem is a2 + b2 = c2
so to find the other side you simply do the opposite:
c2-b2= a2
and then find the square root. Or keep it as a surd.

we know that

C^2 = A^2 + B^2..

if I instead want to solve say, for B!,I remove A^2 out of the way by subtracting A^2 from both sides..

this will give you B^2 all by itself

or, B^2 = C^2 - A^2..

then, once you substitute your numbers into C and A, you square them, subtract, then finally take the square root of both sides..
to give you

B= sqrt ( C^2 - A^2)

to sove for A, apply same steps, but remove B instead..

good luck..

we've been doing this at school:
|\
| \
X | \ 9cm (hypotenuse)
| \
|___\
6cm (not to scale)

9^2=6^2 + X^2
81= 36 + X^2
81-36 = 45
45=X^2
X= square root of 45 = 6.7
X = 6.7

Hope this helps

Just rewrite the equation, so a^2 = c^2 - b^2

the eqation usally is a(2) +b(2)= c(2)

if you are then trying to find a you would do c(2)-?=b(2)
