i am sure the spirit of the law is such that as long as the store person was asking for the purpose of knowing that the dog was a real service dog and not just a pet being called a service dog all would be fine.
i am also sure that if the dogs owner wished to state that the dog was a service dog and not go into detail say if the person had the dog to alert them to seizures and the person wanted to keep that to themselves that would be fine.
i am not aware of any store or building ever refusing to let a person bring the service dog in unless they were very much suspecting this was not really a service dog.
i suppose some identification as a service dog should be kept by the dogs owner as not all dogs in service require a special harness such as the ones for the blind.

There is no law about that. It is tacky to ask someone with a dog in service dog regalia why the dog is there, but not illegal. I recently sat next to a woman with a service dog on an airplane. He was a very good dog. I asked what his service was and it turns out he does "therapy" for children. That means he goes to children's hospitals and lets the children pet him.

I saw a "clerk" tell a customer that she could not have her dog in the store. I tried to explain the situation to the employee but, he didn't speak or understand English!

I wrote a letter to store management asking that they explain to their employee the use of a service dog.
