It's a Classic film set in unoccupied Africa during the early days of World War II: An American expatriate meets a former lover, with unforeseen complications.

Citizen Kane (1941)

Considered by many to be the best film ever made, this is the story of Charles Foster Kane. The film opens with a long shot of Xanadu - the private estate of one of the world's richest men. In the middle of the estate is a castle. We see, inside the castle, a dying man examining a winter scene within a crystal ball. As he drops it, it smashes, and one word is heard - "Rosebud..." What follows are pieces of newsreel-like footage detailing how Kane amassed his fortune, and turning around full circle at the end.

Now, Voyager
starring Bette Davis

Such a fantastic movie. Bette stars as a ugly duckling in a rich family. she is in her early 20s, and her mother controlls her life. She is teased by her family, and one day has a mental breakdown and is sent to a hospital. At the hospital she is taken through therapy. The doctor helps her with her image. She begins to lose weigh, she buys designer clothes, she gains self confidice. She even has an affair with a married man!
Once she leaves rehab, her elderly mother notices the change in her daughter, and starts to take control of her daughter's life again, this time the daughter stands up for her self!
This is a wonderful movie about a homely, insecure woman who has sort of a ugly duckling turned swan story. I highly recommend it.

Whisky Galore (1949)

A ship laden with Whisky runs aground off a remote Scottish Island.
The locals decide to "rescue" the cargo while the home guard try to stop them. Surely one of the great Ealing comedies

If you'll allow a film from 1939, then I'd have to include The Wizard of Oz.
I won't embarrass myself with a short description. It has to be one of the best films of all time.
