Why not? Erin is hidden in the name Catherine, after all.
The best way to get people to start calling you Erin is to ask some of your close friends to start calling you Erin, and then it will become an accepted thing. And if anyone calls you Cathy or Cath or Kit or whatever, just say, no, my name is Erin.
Just give them a look of "how dumb can you be?" if they ask why.

Catherine is a good name, but choosing for urself an informal name isnt bad either.
If u like Erin for short, let it be so.
For letting everyone know, let it be:
"I am Catherine, you can call me Erin."
Tell ur friends nand of course ur parents.

Erin is a cool shortening of Catherine. Just introduce yourself as Erin. Most people ask you if there is a shortening of your name you prefer.

Just tell them what you told us. You feel Katherine is too formal so you'd like to be called Erin. Sounds perfectly reasonable to me, and I really like the name Erin.

Catherine can be Erin. Catherine can be Johnathan if she wants. You just introduce yourself by whatever name you decide on, but try to stick with it -- you don't want to confuse people.

If that is the nickname that you choose, then you should let others know that is what you liked to be called. Since "Erin" is apart of your name it would seem like a good nickname anyway.

actualy "karen" is the short for catherine...

it wud be appropriate to ask sum1 what to call you only after you get to know each other 'formaly' a little bit. u cannot just ask a store keeper to call you cath if all he/she did was help you locate the pink panther shorts.
