Photo of plant here: http://i194.photobucket.com/albums/z299/wackiewookie/plant.jpg

This is a piece of a plant that was given to my Mom about 17 years ago by my Grandmother. We can't figure out what it is. You may be able to see that the branches are bamboo-like, in sections. It requires very little sunlight and water, and grows quite slowly.
Thanks for your help!

I posted this at Gardenweb.com and two people there also identified it as Aglaonema modestum. I thank you all for your help!

i think it's probably Aglaonema modestum (also known as the "Chinese Evergreen"). You're right about the lighting: it's main virtue is that it does well in poorly lit locations and so is great for poorly lit rooms. For best results, it should be grown in a shallow pot and kept away from draughts and smoky air. In winter, it needs some warmth and moist air (spray plant with water). Do a search on google images for this plant and make sure it is what i think it is.

It looks to be a Canna. In California they are used as "fillers"(grow quickly, and fill in bare spots), will adapt to any light, water or soil conditions. Flower colors range from the reds, pinks, oranges & yellows. Height of these go from 3-6 feet.

Looks like a Canna. Prefers full sun, would rather be in the ground than in a pot, is quite invasive.

Sorry, I don't know. But, that's amazing it's been alive that long. Your family must have a green thumb. I'm going to watch this because I'd like to have one.
