HEY! I'm 32 and I've only been driving 11 months. I had to get my license to get myself to work because my mother died and the bus doesn't go where I work. the nearest one is a mile and a half. When you work with kids you have to be in shape to ride a bike or else you get to work smelling. I am very green oriented, but sometimes it is a way.,...

I drive over 1000 miles a week, most of it in a large SUV (without passengers). I do not take mass transit or public transportation.I like the comfort of the vehicle. I do not think I am "destroying mother nature" as you say.
If you do not like cars, you can use other ways to get around. If more of you "save the earth" types would do that, there would be less traffic on the highways and I could travel faster!!

Well where I live things are pretty far in between places. the towns are 20 to 30 miles apart plus up and down hills . The closest grocery store is 5 miles away and it is darn hard to carry a load of groceries that far. Same with the closest gas station. Closest restaurant is 15 miles up a hill and in the winter when it snows, just too far to walk. Not all of us live where things are a block or 2 away. In Nevada some towns are 100 miles away from each other. I really doubt they have public city transportation between them. It's NOT that we don't care it is just not practicable

My dear, untill you can say that you cycle 20+miles to work each day, and 20+miles home again, who the hell are you to preach at those who drive through necessity.
A bus will cover 20miles in an hour, a car in 25mins. The nearest bus stop is a 1/2hr walk from my house, with nowhere nearby to leave a bike safely.
It really gets my goat that people like you generalise about the owners of cars, you do your cause a discredit.

You sound like you got it all figured out.
Here in NYC, we all use public transportation. Every time there's a mass transit strike (public transportation workers' strike) this city becomes paralyzed. Using public transportation is not an option here. My friends who live in NYC don't even have a driver's license.
Where my sisters live they have no public transportation. They NEED cars. We built this country with cars and roads in mind. So to many people, car or NO car is not an option.
====
It isn't matter of caring about "mother earth" as it is about pushing the government and corporations to provide better options than gasoline cars so people can CHOOSE from better options.

Unless that you are living in a cave and have clothes made out of animal skin. You can not say one word. You are using a computer that uses plactic that is made from oil. The harsh chemicals that go into the fabrication of motherboards and related circutry have to be seen to be belived.
Your bycicle uses metal that is welded together by a poluting gas or joined using electricty. The paint for your bilke is a chemical also.
Have you ever seen a BUS start and stop every block ? and the mushroom cloud it bellows out of an exhaust pipe that is the size of a sewer pipe ?
No you don't realize that because you have been brainwashed and conditioned by the radical left to believe that cars are evil.
EVERYTHING --- I mean EVERYTHING that you use use oil or oil was used to produce it. --Yes even your skateboard wheels.

If this were Japan, the bike would be a viable option. But the trouble lies in not wishing to live near the place you work. This not being a small island....we drive. Viable options for fuel have been available for years. The hydrogen fuel cell is the best to date. But the oil companies are after profit. The allmighty bottom line. Maybe they could be like the tobacco companies, and say that their fuel is killing us, and offer counseling and tell us to stop using their products!

Yes driving is a need. Unless you can ride public transportation to florida, or maybe your bike idea that would be a realistic idea. Hey if you dont like people driving why dont you buy the oil companies and triple the gas prices.

i don't think its a question of whether we care or not,we all care about the place we live, and the planet we live on ,but not by choice we have to work, and we all have to get to and from work, and cars are the tools we use, someday there will be other means of transportation, but until then, and we have them to use ,were stuck with driving, its not the best choice, but its the best one we have at out disposal right now, good luck .

Bicycles are great but they cannot be used all the time. New technology is on the way which will make gas obsolete so don't worry about it.
