...agreed, to a point; David Lynch's version of the film DOES leave much to be desired, as it incoherently hits only the more exploitive highlights of the story, in typically twisted David Lynch style, and the special effects are respectfully desent...
However...
It's far cry better than the dry, long and drawn out T.V. version, originally presented on the Sci-Fi channel, a few years ago; in THAT one, the director, writers and producers chose to put damn near everything into the fray, including the kitchen sink, and ended up with something unbelievably un-extraordinary!!!

I hate to say it - but I loved the movie Dune. I first saw it when I was a child and was so fascinated that I insisted on reading the books (i was only 7).
I prefer the series from the Sci-Fi channel, but I still love the origanal.

I hated it the first time I saw it. Almost walked out of the theater. Thought it was incomprehensible garbage, and I'd read the book. (One of the best damned books ever written, too, sci-fi or other.) But I've seen it a couple times since then, and it's grown on me. Don't know why. (And Sean Young *is* hot.) Still not a movie I'd recommend, but not quite the worst movie ever made.

Not the worst, but certainly one of the most disappointing, considering the novel it was adapted from. The visualization and exposition of some of the key concepts and events was totally lame, and some of the characterizations were unfortunate - Baron Harkonnen as a cartoon villain, for example. The Sci-Fi channel miniseries was more faithful to the novel, but plodding and dull.

Not even close to the worst. It's not a great film, but it has a decent script, and the cinematography is awesome. I remember when it came out, they handed a cheat sheet to everyone who came into the theater with all sorts of definitions and explanations of names and places. Guess they knew most of those who hadn't read the book would have a hard time understanding it. Read the book, you may enjoy it more.
