40-70, if they are in a group home for the reason that they have trouble living on their own.
But people have differing amounts of independence in their personalities. Some very low IQ people have the ability to follow a programmed kind of system of living, and can be surprisingly independent.
On the other hand, some people with IQ's of 80, who have various organizational trouble, drug trouble, emotional trouble, can really need a group home.
And there may be teachable, able 30-something IQ people who "graduated" from in hospital situations, to group home situations, where they might be at a special day program some number of days a week, for which they get picked up by a bus, just like a school child.
None of this is really looking at the other kinds of day programs that are for diagnosable people (as apposed to low functioning due to low IQ people) who just can't manage "on the outside" successfully. Those people do not easily fall into IQ categories.

Depends on the type of group home.
In the end it is all about money and where the funding comes from. I personal who is MR/DD (Mental retardation/developmental disability) with typically an IQ of 70 or below will be able to get social security benefits that can then go towards the cost of there care in a group home.
People who are have lower IQ are not required to live in a group home and depending on issues like guardianship and their ability to make choices will determine issues like this.
People with mental health issues end up with difficulty in their ability to function and meet their basic needs. They may have a high or normal IQ, but due to mental health symptoms are not able to live independently.
Similar to the MR/DD population the residential group home/care home situation for people with mental illness is about funding. People with a severe and chronic mental illness should be determined as a having a psychiatric disability and therefore would get social security benefits that can pay for this care.
Both populations even with their disability have the potential to live on their own especially when surrounded by alot of support.

Any number of people with varying IQ's live in group homes. Also in group homes are sexual offenders, addicts, alcoholics, schizophrenics, autistic and physically handicapped and mentally handicapped individuals.
Each state has requirements that must be met for an individual to live independently.

That's hard to say. My friends brother is mentally challanged, and he lives with his mentally and physically challenged fiance without having to be monitored. They seem to be doing ok. And they both have minds of 5 years old so I'm not sure if IQ's have anything to do with it. Grant it their parents go over every weekend to help with cleaning but other than that their mostly on their own.

That is very difficult to say because people are in group homes for varying reasons....from addictions, to mental retardation of varying degrees, to Down's syndrome, to psychiatric problems. There are some people who are considered retarded who they call idiot savant (like Rainmain)who have an extraordinary ability. IQ is very, very hard to average as is maturity!!
