The first I remember reading were the Little House On The Prairie series, but I'm sure I read many others before then.

I don't remember the very first book I read on my own, but "Charlotte's Web" comes to mind. So does, "Are You There God? It's Me Margaret."

I can't really remember exactly. If you're talking about chapter books (as opposed to picture books) it was probably one of the Ramona books by Beverly Cleary.
Yesterday my 7 year old finished his very first chapter book that he read to himself and I am soooo proud of him! The book is Ferno the Fire Dragon and it is the first book of the Beast Quest series.

"The Little White Rabbit Who Wanted Red Wings", the 1940's version with double pages and fabulous illustration. I can still clearly see the pictures and the little faces and the colors lol.
