I respect and admire the Yankees a whole lot, but most likely not for the same reasons as many do.... ("Love" is such a serious word!)
First, I am not from the New York area; I am originally from the southwest.
Second, I was raised in a situation where due to family ties, I was lucky enough to have access to the San Francisco Giants during spring training in the Casa Grande and Phoenix, Arizona area, so knew many of their players in the 1960s while I was growing up. Most people would simply stick with allegiances like that, but I didn't.
Third, I had been involved in baseball in many different capacities over the years, YET HAVE HELD NO POSITION IN THE YANKEES ORGANIZATION.
Why, then, have I learned to respect the Yankees like I do now? Because THERE IS NO ORGANIZATION IN THE GAME that has demonstrated the class and consistency they have demonstrated over the years. Not only have they of course won many more championships than the other teams, but EVEN WHEN THEY HAVE FALLEN SHORT, THEY STILL ACT WITH DIGNITY and make the adjustments necessary to improve their outcome in the future.
Even George Steinbrenner has realized that despite the high priced contracts, the players are still human and will fail or at times fall short of their goals, but it is the overall outcome that is important, and his teams are statistically more liable to be successful than other teams over a 162 game season. In other words, IF THEY STAY HEALTHY, they will end up on top more times than they will lose. THAT is the measure of how good a team really is.
Let's face it: Though the Yankees have not won the championship for several years, what other team has been as successful year in and year out? About the only team that has come close is the Atlanta Braves - and that is only for a little more than a decade - not the better part of a century like the Yankees.
In any professional sport, if there is any type of parity at all, no team is going to win the whole enchilada each and every year. There are too many factors that negatively influence that possible outcome: Injuries, bad calls, bad bounces, great plays by an opponent, one team getting extremely hot at the end of the year, etc. The fact is that NO TEAM IN THIS DAY AND AGE IS GOING TO CONSISTENTLY WIN THE WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP AND DOMINATE BASEBALL FOR A DURATION OF MORE THAN TWO TO THREE YEARS AT ONE TIME. (same for other sports, too, huh? Check the records.)
In a way, that is good. Who would watch if the Yankees won every year, or the Red Sox, or the Braves, etc? I enjoy the parity, and I'm sure you do, too, when it all comes down to it.
So which team, then, is the best in baseball and most worthy of my admiration because of their storied past - both good and bad? I naturally have to say the Yankees. We can argue that concept until we are all blue in the face, but the numbers simply prove it. Just like the Orioles were most likely the best team in the Eighties due to their overall record, THE YANKEES ARE THE ALL-TIME CLASS OF BASEBALL; it's that simple.
Let some other team win as often and put up the Division flags, American League pennants, or World Series championships more often OVER THE NEXT CENTURY and then perhaps they, instead of the Yankees, can call themselves the best.... :-)

I love the Yankees! But lately I haven't been feeling the love because they've been playing lousy! Other than that Derek Jeter is my favorite player with my favorite number! (#2).
