I hear that they are starting to emerge in the midwest. What will they do to us when they are above the ground surface?

While not very pleasant to look at (unless you happen to like insects) they're completely harmless to humans and animals. As the poster above stated, the animals will have a high protein food source after the Cicada's have emerged, mated and begun a new generation.

no. I grew up in the midwest, but now in CA. Thinking about flying out to visit family I still have there just to see the bugs too. They are really cool. They are all over the place for a few weeks and then they die and are all over the place.

The make sooo much noise, and it's all over the place for those few weeks, but I always thought it was really cool.

Don't look like a tree, and don't stand still for too long, or you will be covered in (mating) cicadas. If more than a few thousand land on you, you could be smothered.
They will not even know you are there, they don't care. I don't even think that they eat until they mate and die.

They won't attack you. They might fly into you because they are confused and can't see well.. Animals will love them because they are a tasty snack for them and high in protein.

nothing intentionally, all they do is mate and make noise. Since they're insects they'll often land on you for no apparent reason. Stay indoors I guess.

They make strange hissing noises, mate & then die. Then they make a crunching noise if you step on them. They make a mess. Yuck.

I just read that they don't attack or bite. They sure are creepy though.
