I have this new brother sewing machine...model LS-2125i...and I'd finish sewing a strap, then look at the back of the material and its would be just one big mess. Is it the tension? I'm clueless.

Yo Nilla--
If the stitch isn't locking in the middle of the material or at least AT the exact backside OF the material being sewed -- it is the tension adjustment that needs to be "tweaked"
"a mess" at the backside of the project means that the tension on the top --or feeding thread is set too loose and the preset tensions of the underside or "bobbin" side is controlling the "lock stitch" --- tighten the top tension at the machine head !!!

Remember this... TNT. This stands for Thread, Needle, Tension. First be positive your threading it right. Then be sure your needle is in the right way and your putting the thread thru the right direction. Then look at your tension (upper). The way you describe this its a common problem anyone can make. Bobbin is in wrong. Check to see if the bobbin is in right. When you have it in the bobbincase and the thread under the tension spring of the bobbincase... pull the thread. If the bobbin turns counterclockwise you have the bobbin in upside down. Turn it over it should turn clockwise when you pull the thread. I'm a sewing machine tech and see this alot. (yes, I've done it too.)
If you have it right then your top tension must be on 0 so tighten it up. (little by little until its good.)
Good luck

Yes, the tension probably needs to be adjusted. Get a piece of scrap material and play with the tension until you get it where you need it. If you plan on doing a lot of heavy duty sewing you might want to sell the brother and invest in a Viking or Singer. I've had a Viking Daisy for about three years and it's been great, I've sewn all kinds of materials on it with no troubles.

When this happens to me, it usually means the bobbin thread has slipped out of the little slot in the bobbin case. I've been sewing professionally for many years and I can honestly say I have never adjusted the tension. The tune-up guy does it for me once a year.

it sounds like the tension needs to be adjusted. another thing you could try before you mess with the tension is try re threading your machine and take out the bobin and put it back in. when my machine sews weird the first thing i try is re threading it and most times it works.

I go with the re-thread answers... Don't mess with the tension knobs.. Try to re-thread then check out the bobbin,, I bet its the bobbin,
