I don't think about it - I smiled because I am happy and hopefully, even if they are having a bad day and didn't show it right away, my smile will have at least made them feel a little better.

It would depend on what kind of smile I was giving them. Have you never smiled at someone else's ignorance and shake your head? I don't expect they will smile back then, unless they are a good friend and know they screwed up.

When I smile at someone it gives me power in the relationship. I am so powerful I can afford to be gracious and polite to them, I do not need to ask them for something or argue because the smile has already given me the upper hand. Plus people usually appreciate it.

I think that the other person is a mean jerk and never smile at them again. I also feel weird for smiling at them in the first place.

During the age of infancy through preschool, humans learn to decode hundreds of ‘messages’ sent through facial expressions. It is a really form of communication which cross all language barriers. That said, if one smiles with an expectation of it being reciprocated and it is not, than a sense of mild rejection is likely.

maybe they did not see me do that, or they are having a bad day, or they are slow responders and did not smile in time for me to see them, they have something else on their mind or they are just mean people
