You should GO with Vista. Really. Get a Toshiba or HP with 1GB of RAM or more and get Windows Vista Home Premium.
Look at Costco or Staples. Both stores have an awesome no-hassle return policy.
Hang on to the Windows Vista disk that comes with... buy a copy of Windows XP, if that's your choice. The future is Vista, so you really should re-think your plans.
Good luck and Happy Computing!

You can still get laptops with XP - you just have to look around. If, however, you settle on one with Vista, you could ask the seller if he would exchange XP for Vista. If you buy from a well-established seller like HP or Dell, you should be able to make a deal.

Well if you buy a laptop with Vista and for whatever reason you decide you want WindowsXP instead you just need to format and install it (this of course requires that you buy a copy of WindowsXP) . Basically you reboot your computer with the WindowsXP Setup disc in the drive, this will enter the installation setup. From here you will just follow the directions and format your main hard drive (removing Vista), and install WindowsXP. It's very easy to do and is almost impossible to screw up. It's as easy as that.
If you want to buy a laptop that has WindowsXP already installed on it you can try:
1) Shop around online, chances are you can find a laptop you like that comes with WindowsXP. Newegg.com has a lot of great WinXP laptops in their inventory.
2) If ordering direct from the manufacturer like Hp.com or toshiba.com choose WindowsXP when you are customizing your order. Chances are good you can choose XP from the operating system section. If WindowsXP is not listed as an operating system choice then call them up and demand they sell you one with WindowsXP, it shouldn't be to hard for them to do this for you (especially when your shelling out so much cash)
Hope this helps you!

I'm very satisfied with my Dell E1705. I recommend that you look at these as well. They are well rated. Vista is not bad enough to uninstall and besides you'll then have to find XP drivers. By the way, get your drivers only from your laptop manufacturer as those from component manufacturer's do not work.... I found out the hard way.

Get a Macbook Pro, then you can install windows XP on it. The beautiful result is that you'll be able to have Mac OSX and XP on your system at once.
EDIT.........................................
danuitti is correct. He is very helpful, too. He has answered some of my questions. You should stick with Vista, but I'd say get at least 2GB of RAM.

If the laptop is preinstalled with Vista, you have to opt for Retail version of Windows XP, if any of your friends has the same disk you can use it. please tell me whether the laptop has a SATA hard drive, if yes, XP will not recognize it. You need the SATA drivers for that HDD. here is the link with steps for installing the sata drivers,
