The reason San Diego is a great place to live, is also the reason the rents are so high. You should expect houses to rent for $1500 and up, while apartments should be about $1200 and up. It's not a cheap city to live in.
It's a great city to live in, with plenty to see and do. The weather is considered the best in the nation year round.

Well, I haven't lived in Santa Barbara, but I have lived in San Diego most of my life. Santa Barbara is far more beautiful as well as more expensive to live, however there are probably more opportunities for work as a musician in San Diego. The people here in San Diego are more likely to be less pretentious as well. Again - I can't speak for Santa Barbara - I have only been there a couple of times. My answer is based upon what I know of San Diego.

The climate is delightful, Balboa Park is fabulous, the downtown is nice, the zoo is outstanding, and it ain't cheap. Get a copy of a San Diego newspaper and check the real estate listings to find out what it will cost to live there.

The only place to live is La Jolla -
that is what makes San Diego great. Live close to the Ocean.

No the rent is not cheap. You can find some cheaper places. But since you already live in los angeles you should be fine. You are already used to high costs. Check rent.com or signonsandiego.com. And if you are looking for fun stuff to do out here check my blog. I leave the link in the signature section. Have fun!

Cheap rent? You've got to be kidding. If you're coming from LA, it's probably about the same. But it completely depends on how nice/safe of a neighborhood you want to live in. SD's a great place compared to LA, but not *too* different. Less traffic and people are generally more laid-back.

I am surprised that, as close as you are in L.A. you haven't heard about the notoriously expensive housing prices in San Diego. Pay off? You bet, It's totally gorgeous with near perfect weather year round. Neither too hot nor too cold. And beautiful. The trade off is that it can e somewhat crowded, who doesn't want to live in paradise?

I think the rents are kinda high, like in the $1,000 a month and up range for apartments. Its a nice place, weather is about like you get in LA. Its a big beach town, people love beach life.
