The leading processor for the past 8 months or so has been the Intel Core 2 Duo. According to many review sites and magazines, that's not going to change anytime soon. AMD might have something out soon to help cut the gap, but on paper, nothing is going to be released this year to take out Intel's dominance.

So with that said, you might want to consider getting socket 775 and go with Intel. It's a preference technically, but might as well start out with the leading technology at the time of your build. You don't have to get the fastest Core 2 Duo either. Even the slowest ones give AMD a run for its money.

You could choose between AM2 for AMD and LGA775 for Intel. If you have limited budget, you could start w/ a Sempron or a Celeron on a motherboard w/ integrated graphics. This would be enough for web browsing, office apps, downloading and DVD viewing. Once you expand usage to gaming, you could install a graphics card. When you feel the need for more processing horsepower, you can sell your Sempron or Celeron and upgrade to a faster processor or perhaps the dual cores. Better start your build w/ a power supply that can easily cope w/ your upgrades. A power supply that has a high wattage rating runs cooler and lasts longer.

Start your new build NOW. Processors, ddr2 RAM and hard drives are so cheap nowadays.

if you already own the motherboard you are planning on using you have to use the socket that it supports. if you are planning on building one including getting a different motherboard then on the lower end go with Socket 939/AM2 and on the higher end just a better AM2. i dislike intel for different reasons, but if you aren't apposed to Intel then you might also look into LGA 775, or Socket M

Depends on what processor you want. I tend to lean towards AMD so I would suggest getting the AM2 socket. AMD is making the AM2+ and AM3 processors backward compatible, so that motherboard will last you the longest time.

If you are asking which socket on the mb is the right one . . you have to know the specs on the board. Use the first socket. You will need the mb manual, without it things will short out.
