Who is Luna Lovegood in the Harry Potter books?

i read the book along time ago, so i forgot, like who she is and why shes in the movie? i know shes friends with harry and i think they have similar lives. is there any else u can tell me about her?

I am just adding to Hollyhoc's answer...Luna's mother was a very talented witch who died when she was nine....that is why she can see the thestrals. She is from Ravenclaw, she is a little eccentric...she loves wearing butter beer cork neclaces.She was Harry's date ..."as a friend" in Slughorn's party...and of all his friends, she was the one who truly empathised with Harry when Sirius died.

Luna "Loony" Lovegood (born c. 1981) is a fictional character from the Harry Potter series. She is described as looking like an embodiment of dottiness, with her wand tucked behind her ear for safekeeping, orange radish earrings (not to be confused with turnips), and a necklace made of butterbeer corks.

Luna's father is the editor of The Quibbler, a magazine where he prints (according to her) "important stories he thinks the public needs to know." The stories are often ridiculously untrue and silly; Harry Potter briefly considers that it may be a spoof magazine, until he learns that Luna believes them; thus many consider her beliefs odd. Luna defends her beliefs, her father and his magazine against insults from other characters, most notably from Hermione Granger; these are the only instances where she snaps out of her customary "dreamy phase."

Despite her eccentricity and somewhat bizarre beliefs, Luna seems to be perfectly sane, and the fact that she is in Ravenclaw house suggests that she is also quite intelligent. She also has much moral and emotional insight and appears to be quite good at comforting others.

The character will be portrayed by Evanna Lynch in the film adaptation of Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix. On her website, Rowling has described the actress as "perfect" for the role.

Luna Lovegood is introduced in OotP. She is considered strange by the other students, who play tricks on her. Her father is the publisher of the Scribbler, sort of a wizarding supermarket tabloid.

Luna saw her mother die, so she too can see thestrils (sp). She has a different way of looking at the world but is a pretty strong witch.

She joins "Dumbledore's Army" and is one of the few to come help when the Deatheaters attack in HBP.

I'm not completely sure, but I got the idea that she particularly likes Neville Longbottom.

I believe she is from Hufflepuff or Ravenclaw, she meets Neville and Harry on the train on the way to school their 5th year. She can see the horses that pull the carriages just like Harry and Neville. Her father is the editor of the Quibbler and she is a member of the D.A.
