Would those be the grapes of wrath? I mean if they were that poor... I think their toga parties must have been the bomb, but then again my mind is Roman.
Please don't wine about my answer.

LOL.. I don't think so.. The Romans were the Smartest and most industrious People of their time which lasted hundreds of years. They worked hard, never mind orgies.
The city was bursting with Builders, Artitects, Engineers, doctors, artists, Politicians, soldiers, housewifes, Farmers, Bakers, with every kind of industrious person. The people had too much of everything to be poor.
Rome was the Capital of the World at that Time, all roads led to Rome and all of Europe wanted to be part of Rome.
The land around Rome was one of the most beautiful, bountiful and most productive. The people one of the most industrious.. They had plenty, and not just the rich. The Romans were the wealthiest of all of Europe. Their lands were full of orchards of every kind of fruit, vineyards, farms of every kind of vegetables and animals, olive groves.and the sea was very close with fish of every kind.
The Romans conquered those countries around Rome to be united in one, but remember most of these countries were full of small hamlets with nothing but poverty. The Roman's desire of conquering was more wanting all of Europe to have the same wealth, education and the knowledge they had. They brought process, and education to most of Europe, a Europe that was so poor, so little educated and had no hygiene of any kind. The Romans brought with them a wealth of knowledge, and process of every kind. The Romans build aqueducts and brought water to most all the places they conquered.. If the Romans were so poor do you think they could have done all of the things they did. If they were so poor, surely they would have been too poor to conquer all of Europe, the Middle East. How could they have fed an army of men that was in Rome and outside Rome if they were so poor? I don't so.. Rome was the Wealthest city and all of Europe wanted to enter Rome and be a Roman for in Rome they could live if not in wealth but live with plenty.
Yes, the Romans were conquers, but They gave more than they conquered.. If they had all these orgies that is told, do you think they would have done all they did, not just in their own land but throughout Europe, Great Britain and the Middle East.. I don't think so.
In conclusion the people had plenty, they did not need orgies to eat grapes.. they had plenty of grapes in their own lands and orchards..
Maybe it was the people in the cities outside of Rome, in Europe, the ones that the Romans conquered that went to those Roman Feast's, Celebrations of Triumph, Celebrations of Conquer, to see what a Roman feast was and maybe to eat some good Roman Food.
