My computer is really slow lately. Out of 114 gb, my computer only has 17 some left. I keep getting messages about low virtual memory and don't know what to do about it. I had a bunch of viruses and ever since then it's been slower. I try to defrag as much as I can. What can I do, without buying a new computer, to make it run more efficiently?

Add RAM memory

What do you primarily use your pc for? I have all in all 240 GB of Hard Drive space and I have about 50 GB left. How much ram do you have? And What Operating System are you using? If you are into multimedia work (editing video, photo's, music etc.), you want at least 512 MB of ram. You could always close applications that you are not using, and that doesn't mean keep them running in the taskbar. That will free up some ram for you to use. The purpose of doing a defrag is to cut the work of the needle on the hard drive, meaning that it allows it to move less which makes the hard drive last longer. It doesn't have much value when it comes to speeding up your pc.

Well, I suggest you to remove all the virus, defragment the harddrive, stop the indexing services, remove spyware and adware. Also check with the below steps that will boost the system speed with out adding RAM.

To improve the core system performance in Windows XP, you should
make some modifications to the registry entries. I recommend you take a
backup of the Registry so that any damage to Registry during modification
can be restored.

CAUTION: A registry backup is essential. An incorrect
registry entry may cause serious system problems or
prevent the computer from starting. You will not be
warned of any incorrect registry entries. If the
registry is not backed up, the only way to recover
the system is by reinstalling the operating system.

To backup the registry:

1. Click Start and select Run.
2. Type REGEDIT in the Open field and click OK.
3. Click "File" in the menu.
4. Click "Export" from the drop-down menu.
5. Click the down-arrow beside "Save In" and select Local Disk(C:).
6. Type BACKUP.REG in the File Name field.
7. Click Save.

After taking a backup of the registry, change the Registry settings by
following these steps:

1. Click Start, select Run, and type regedit.
2. Click the plus (+) sign next to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE.
3. Click the plus (+) sign next to System.
4. Click the plus (+) sign next to CurrentControlSet.
5. Click the plus (+) sign next to Control.
6. Click the plus (+) sign next to Session Manager.
7. Click Memory Management.
8. Locate and right-click the "DisablePagingExecutive" option on the right
pane.
9. Select Modify and change the value to "1".
10. Locate and right-click the "LargeSystemCache" option on the right
pane.
11. Select Modify and change the value to "1".

Now, you should create a DWORD value, "IOPageLockLimit" in the open
Registry Window by following these steps:

1. Right-click an empty space in the right window pane and select Create.
2. Name the value as IOPageLockLimit.
3. Double-click the IOPageLockLimit entry to add a hex value.
4. Set the hex value based on the amount of RAM installed on the system.

For 128 MB Ram the hex value is 4000.
For 256 MB RAM the hex value is 10000.
For 512 MB RAM the hex value is 40000.

5. Click OK.
6. From the Registry menu, click Exit.
7. Restart the system.

These steps should now improve the core system performance in Windows XP.

Hello, (ANS) The answer is of course YES! there are loads of different things you can do in XP which can tweak & tune windows. Here are just a couple of suggestions to start with, every one of these will make XP run faster. No.1 Turn off the x3 column split menu, and set the menu into classic windows mode. No.2 turn off "ALL" the graphics and eye candy rubbish as it all gobbles system resources. to do this goto>control panel, system>open system>goto the advanced tab,>see performance, click on the settings button>see visual effects tab, set the radio button to adjust for best performance. click OK. This will speed up your system> No.3 Also whilst in performance options> goto the advanced tab, on the advanced tab > set memory to system cache. No.4 also make sure the page file or virtual memory is set to let windows manage the virtual memory. No.5 remove any non essential software programs, don't load (install) more than 25 to 30 applications on your system. No.6 there are system services which run in the background which can be turned off or disabled. For each system service that is turned off your machine will run faster. See: computer management console, see the services applet. Its a fairly long listing and you do have to know what your doing here, in terms of what can and what cannot be turned off. But even here some obvious items can be stopped or disabled such as Telnet, such as UPS, such as smart card logon, etc. There are guides which will help you with this if you run a quick web search via Yahoo or google. Try search on turning off XP services? No.7 check your machine with anti virus software (such as FREE AVG anti virus) to ensure your machine s free from infections or parasites which might slow it down No.8 add more physical RAM if you can afford it and if your system has some free slots inside. **There are many other XP tweaks I could mention to vastly improve XP's overall speed & performance but these are more complex and involve editing the system registry which is only for an advanced or highly experienced user (no disrespect!! but its very easy to screw up a machine in seconds if you don't know what your doing editing the registry. So its to be avoided otherwise). Hope that helps? it should do Kind Regards Ivan

Update your firewall and spyware (I prefer using Norton 2007, which will blocks all type of virus and worms.
), and then you should scan your computer in safe mode.

after you remove the virus, I recommend you to use firefox browser. It's safer than IE.
It can prevent viruses such as worm, trojan etc. Firefox browser can be downloaded from http://www.mollzia.com
