Why do you think the west wanted a unified Germany?
The fact of a divided and weak Germany was perfectly acceptable to the west after WW2.
The reunification of Germany after the demolition of the Berlin Wall caused a lot of unease in western governments.

Don't know what you are referring to, the cold war or 1989?
In the cold war, it was rather the west that prevented a german reunification, Stalin offered german reunification in 1952 under the condition that germany would remain neutral.West Germany and the US rejected that offer bc. they believed Stalin just wanted to slow down german-american negotiations with that.
