Put an owl decoy on it. Seriously, all birds regard the owl as a predator and it works quite well. Don't like Owls? There are these things called pigeon spikes, that don't allow the birds to land on your mailbox. Completely harmless to birds, it just doesn't give them a very comfortable place to sit and chat.

You could try oiling your mailbox, or put some sort of spiky mat on top of it so they don't like roosting on it.
A more beautiful solution might be to put an 8 to 10 foot post up next to the box, and attach an arm over the box. Hang windchimes over it -- you might add a mobile of CDs. Make the arm strong enough for your mobile/windchimes, but flimsy enough that it dips dangerously when birds roost on it.
There's some sort of sticky stuff that cities use to keep the birds from roosting, but I've heard the success rate is erratic.

I know this sounds weird and ridiculous, but try taping or super glueing CDs on the shiny side to your mailbox. birds dont like CDs and they fly away from them, probably because they are shiny and gets into their eyes. I also have some neighbors who put CDs on their tree's branches to keep birds away from them. maybe the same will work for mailboxes, who knows. ive never tried it but it might work.

I was going to suggest the owl thing as well. I've seen guys put them on their small Cessna airplanes before to keep the birds off(poop) the planes. I have by my garden, so far so good....think it was about 13. at Lowes.

I used to manage a marina and we had a really bad problem with seagulls. Best solution was Cayenne pepper.
