I will be flying to Florida with my 1 year old daughter. She will be on my lap. Do I need to bring a car seat along or not? I will probably take a taxi to the hotel and to the airport, but other wise will walk or take public transportation to any other places I travel?

You don't want to hear this, but I would strongly suggest you purchase an airplane seat for you daughter, take her carseat, and make sure she is securely strapped into it during the flight. Then you can also use it when you take a taxi.

Why? because riding on a parents lap is not safe, even on the average flight. During turbulence, a child can fly off the parents lap and be injured, (like a fast stop in a vehicle where the child is not secured). If you value the health and safety of your precious child, spend the extra money for the seat.

In any case, check with the taxi services in the area you are flying to and see if they are required to conform to local laws regarding carseats, and what those laws are.

You definitely need to take a carseat, but I recommend checking it on as luggage.

Some airlines (not many--Southwest is one) do not have assigned seating, so if they have extra seats you can put your baby in the carseat in its own seat. In that case, you would bring the carseat onto the plane with you, then if they don't have extra seats, the flight attendant can check it on for you. You can also ask beforehand how full the flight is.

Regardless, you must have a carseat for the cab. There is the possibility of requesting a carseat from a cab company beforehand, but there would be extra cost and I'm not sure of availability. Best option is to check on the carseat with the rest of the luggage...no extra cost.
