I have a HP Pavilion 542x that I got in late 2002. It has a 1.8Ghz Intel Celeron processor, Windows XP Home SP1 (recently ordered SP2 on CD) and I curently have 256MB of RAM.
I'd rather not spend too much, but how much should I get, and what kind? I usually always have tons of stuff running, like iTunes, Avast, ZoneAlarm, Firefox, Weatherbug, AOL...you get the picture.

Your computer can hold a maximum 2 Gig of memory. I would say to add a Gig (1024MB) of more memory.
Your computer uses DDR PC2700 memory.
Go to crucial.com and enter in your computer info.

Hi,Well if you want to upgrade the memory ram but you don't want to spend that much of money, you can get another 256 and that will be 512,but if your PC or laptop have just one memory ram slot then you have to take the old 256 out and insert a 512 one ,That should be enough for the moment and the brand I prefer is KINGSTON or PNY, OK

You can try HP's web site, but for a machine that old they will probably refer you to www.crucial.com, which has the memory business down pat. Go to the web site, tell what you've got, and they'll tell you what you can get and what it will cost. You want 512 Mb minimum, 768 would be nice, and 1024 is more than you need unless you are doing sound or video processing. I bought stuff from them a while back, plugged it in, and it worked.

Try www.newegg.com they have quality goods at not near the same price as best buy would have them.
It doesnt really depend on what brand of memory you buy, but stay away from something too cheap (1GB for about 70-100 bucks is good) Currently i have 2GB of RAM and it cost me about 190 bucks total. Your RAM is quite low honestly, and you might want to think about grabbing a 1GB stick to add on. It will make it MUCH MUCH faster.
EDIT: The brand i bought both times was Kingston, good reliable stuff.

Here's your mobo details:
http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?docname=bph07540&lc=en&cc=us&dlc=&product=83514
It has 2 slots for ddr266 and max of 2Gb.
LOW COST OPTION- Add another 256mb stick.
GREAT but MORE EXPENSIVE option - Put 2x512mb or 1x1Gb RAM.
Here's how to do it:
