Because this is a country that forgives those that admit their mistakes and gives everyone a second chance........... At least in theory or people want everyone to believe they would be all forgiving and righteous. Look how many times each day we are told it isn't "the offender's fault" it was their background , family experiences or some abuse they suffered. Just as an example -Al Sharpton has made some very hurtful, outrageous remarks over the years against college students, police officers, etc..based mainly on their race being different than his........but he is above reproach and not a racist.

I think they just called him DOG. They didn't want to be too imaginative on that show.

the show just called him "Boy" or "Dog", but in real life, his name was Benji. He later got his own film series.
