Seemed a little anticlimactic, when Kite could not get up to speed, and PJ Jones, could not get the laps to fix his handling.

Generally the format seemed to work and I have to admit I was happy when Jimmy Kite, desperately trying to make the field, pulled into the pits after that `slow' first lap.
I'm sure I'm not the only one who noticed the gamesmanship on Kite and his teams' part. Teams tend to push the car and driver into the scrutineering bay, but his was presented sans Kite, then he seemed to take his time getting into the car (after it passed scrutineering) and only going out on the track with barely enough time left before the 6:00 p.m. curfew.
Of course the motive was to prevent Marty Roth from making another qualifying attempt should Kite bump him from the field. Justice was done when Kite's slow time matched his dalliance.
By the way, when was the last time and how often did it happen, that `50- 60' cars tried to qualify for the Indianapolis 500? I don't recall seeing so many cars as long as I've watched qualifications and the race.

Great idea for a format, too bad it wasn't used back in the day when there were 50-60 cars trying to get into the field. The final weekend has become the attempts for drivers/teams who get minimal funding packages together very late & know their chances are slim in making the field.
