better homes and garden has an AWESOME gallery of plants, descriptions, what grows in your area, what looks good together. they have drawings of sample gardens, as well as an online landscape planner.

IF you can put up with all of their popups to buy their magazine (a pain in the butt) theirs is the best complete site I've visited.

Try them even if you end up using another, you won't regret it.

You can't landscape over asphalt. If you want grass you will have to rip out the asphalt and put down top soil. It will end up being a few thousand of dollars, depending on the size. If you don't want to go through that you can just put lots of potted planters around the asphalt to distract you from the ground. You can also put down AstroTurf over it to hide it cheaply and maintenance free.
