Cover that face with something, for God's sake.

That the child does not look like either parent or looks like someone who could have been the daddy.
Just smile and be polite. Give them the attention and support that they deserve at that point.

"Can I wake her up?"
"She smells like she needs changing - ooh, did you deliberately dress her in that?"

"Whoah! Look at the face on that nose!"

"I'm sure he'll/she'll grow into those ears" (Then quietlly) "shall we book the flying lessons now?"

"He/she is gorgeous. Don't worry, you can always dye the ginger hair later. No-one will ever know"

"I know you must be a little bit tired, but now baby is asleep at last, why don't we POP the cork on this bottle & celebrate!"

Each comment to be taken very light-heartedly. Babies are a very precious gift. Sadly, some of them grow up into not nice adults.
Hope you smiled anyway!

That's not how you do it, let me show you the RIGHT way. Or saying something about your child did this or that before their child did, insinuating that something is wrong with their child.

My sister and I have a secret code word for ugly babies...we call them "precious". If she ever has an ug-o for a kid, I don't know what I'll say to play it off lol

I didn't like the question "How old is she?", because my baby was very sick and they would always tell me how small she was for her age. This would bring back terrible recollections of all her problems, and I would not want to explain why she was so small

When you first see the new baby "I hope that you are going to have that removed - it's ugly (regarding birthmark).

I'm sure he will outgrow that.

Was he planned or not?
