I know on "I Love Lucy" they had to fight with CBS to have Lucy be pregnant on the show. And they couldn't say pregnant either; in fact the title of the episode where Ricky finds out that Lucy's pregnant is "Lucy is Encienite"

it wasn't so much "censorship" as much as the content was just cleaner....every adult knew that mom and pop was gonna get nekkid that night after wally and the beav.. was asleep...so there was no reason to put it on the show.
Sort of like...whats more attractive...a totally nude person or a person dressed to allow the imagination to run wild.....also censorship wasn't just about sex... it was about protecting young minds from ideas that would interfere with life as we knew it. There were no shows about Hinduism or Buddism because those religions applied to a way of life that suggested that it's better to have nothing than strive to have the American dream. That just would not do !

It was groundbreaking on "Ozzie and Harriet" because this was the first show to show a married couple sharing a bed. Before that (like on I Love Lucy), couples always had separate beds. On "Gilligan's Island", the censors were all over them not to show Mary Anne's belly button and so she had to wear higher cut cut-off shorts.

Also, remember that tv was live back then. A lot got through the censors, but was not preserved on tape or film.

Dick Van Dyke and his wife slept in separate beds on "The Dick Van Dyke Show"....
Words we hear all the time nowadays were strictly forbidden, like "pregnant" "diarhea" "constipated" "condom" It was a different time and I'm glad its behind us.
