Well if this is Ireland you can sneak over and pull chunks out of that boggy mess, dry it and burn it for heat, of course. No disadvantage I CAN SEE. Can you?

If this is Taos NM or the desert you use solar. And peat would be well...not in code especially if in a subdivision where certain people would ostracize your unfortunate neighbor, pointing out the lack of "aesthetics or keeping within the spirit of the SW style of building" ALL code for "freaky deaky in our midst" and they would be, well, humiliated and eventually be removed. You would then get to buy the land as peat houses are, from MY memory easily burned down and or leveled and you could then realize a NICE profit from reselling the empty lot, etc. NO real disadvantage here either. So...what was your question again?

The smell. It will be an earthy smell that permeates the whole house. Other than than the next would be getting the house to meet any codes.
