I just watched the movie 'The Fountain' and I have absolutely no idea what happened. Can anyone explain it to me?

Yes...(big spoilers)

The section in the "past" is Izzi's book. She dies before she has an end to it, so the "future" scene is Tommy's idea of the soldier staying with that tree until it can reaches the nebula where everything is renewed and Izzi is reborn. What tricky is that the "future" sequence never *really* happens...it's Tommy's writing...that's why there are moments where the future character reacts to a memory Tommy had before Izzi died.

The "present" is as it is presented.

I can more into depth, but that's the essence. In the end, Tommy ends the book differently than he's first thinking he will because of his memories of his wife. That's why he is reborn...into a man who takes more pleasure in life and his wife, even after she's dead.
