a transmission is so complicated that i wouldn't even want to guess but regardless what is wrong you're going to need a new tranny.

my van did the same thing , i got the thing up in the car jacks and slowly took the cover off , so that the fluid would drain to one corner, go slow to keep the mess down, after you get the cover off , clean it out really good, it's probably full of black clutch debree , replace the trany filter, it will be heavy with the same stuff, with the new filter it comes with a new gasket, use a little permatax to hold the gasket in place , put the pan back on , but don't over tighten the bolts, just snug tight,fill it up , about 6 qts. of AFT. DONOT over fill., my van drove perfect again, if it never been changed, your trany might not work right, but if not all you are out is 50 bucks , not a different trany , but really i think all you need is a filter and fluid change, good luck and let me know how it turns out.

it sounds like the Turk converter is slipping.have a transmission shop check it out.
