I saw my doctor when my daughter was having several ear infections, I was very concerned about the antibiotics also. I asked about trying chiropractic and he said it was worth a try and suggested a follow-up visit about a week after the chiropractic visit. It worked for us!!! I realize others may not have had the same experience but I was very happy and my daughter has not had an ear infection in 2 years. I looked for a chiropractor experienced in pediatrics.

If you give your son the entire round of antibiotics and he still gets ear infections soon after, ask for a referral (if you need one) or just make an appointment (if you don't) with an ENT who specializes in children and infants. My son constantly had ear infections, and was on antibiotics constantly, with no improvement. He ended up having a significant hearing loss, made up his own language based on what he THOUGHT sounds sounded like, and he's almost six and up until about six months ago, was REALLY difficult to understand, three years after surgery.

The occasional ear infection is not out of the ordinary, and it doesn't mean your son is destined for the hearing problems your husband had. But if it occurs over an extended period of time, that's something you need to get looked at by a doctor who will actually fix the problem, instead of constantly prescribe antibiotics.

And remember, when your son is given a round of antibiotics, it's important to take the ENTIRE thing, even if he seems to be feeling better.

A recent study that was done suggested that MOST ear infections should simply be allowed to run their course and the child should not be given antibiotics. However, they did also say that if the child is in severe pain or that it lasts for more than a few days, medication should be given. You may want to sit tight for the next one and see what happens...that is if your son is not screaming in pain about it. The thinking is that antibiotics can cause more long term problems and issues when given to very young children...more issues than the infection ever causes. Of course, you have to do what you are comfortable with and what you feel 'right' about. Good luck.

Actually, I just spoke to our doctor about ear infections both my girls have one. He said that you should be concerned if the child has three or four in one year. You should be concerned and so should your pediatrician. Take him back and point out how many he's had in such a short time. Maybe you can head off worse problems down the road.

My son had chronic ear infections that the doctors insisted on treating with amoxillan each time it came up. (As soon as the medicine ran out, the infection was back.) My boy was in so much pain, I finally demanded a specialist and they sent me to an ear nose and throat doc who put the tubes in his ears. For the first time in three years (from birth to 3) my son could hear. His speech was delayed and neighbors had assumed he was retarded because he didn't respond before, so he had to undergo speech classes and therapy. Please take your son to an EN&T specialist and save time. I wish I had had someone to advise me back then.

And in answer to your other question, they can put tubes in at 6 months if it's necessary.

I hope he seen Dr each time.. seems to me he may not be getting ear infection total clear... One thing is to make sure his doctor knows it be repeating.. they may have to put in tubes to totally get rid of it.. most ear infections at that age is caused by formula getting in ear while feeding make sure he sitting up when drinking, try cotton balls (halved) in his ears when bathing him..
