ok see i have 2 laptops, a 2yr old gateway 1.3 ghz celeron procesor with 2 gig RAM (recently upgraded from 256mb to 2gig) and i have a 1yr old vaio laptop 1.73 ghz pentium with 1 gig RAM. My gateway seemed to improve by alot since i upgraded it from 256 mb to 2 gig ram, now i can play my games better and make my movies and do all that crap now but its still not as good as my Vaio. I noticed that my vaio had a slightly better processor. Will upgrading my gateway's processor into a 2ghz pentium make it run faster? or do i need a bigger hardrive? and also my gateway seems to heat up very fast, i usually have to let it rest after 2 hours. does it need a new fan?

of coarse upgrading your processor will help, but often in a laptop the motherboard it designed around one specific processor so upgrading might not work.
but on a second note and a second step
when you plugged in the memory did you go into the advanced properties in windows and increase the virtual memory size??? if not it will not be using the installed memory efficiently and you will not be getting max performance out of it.
most people don't know about this and never set it.
in order to change the virtual memory size goto the my computer icon ether on the desktop or in the start menu and right click on it and click properties, then click on the advanced tab and click on the settings button under performance, from there you click on another advanced tab and the third option down will be virtual memory, click change, a screen will open with options. select custom size, there will be two fields to fill in, first the initial size should be the same # of megabytes you have in ram so put in 2048 if you have 2gig of ram, next fill in the maximum size put 3072 there. click set and close all the windows and restart.
what this is going to do is increase your virtual memory on the hard disk to 3gig hope you have 3gig extra space on your disk essentially giving windows a total of 5gig to work with for running programs and whatnot, the rule of thumb with virtual memory is always set it at 1.5 times your physical memory size for max performance providing you have enough hard drive room.

good luck

Your gateway has a slow processor and most likely a slow integrated graphics too. You may be able to upgrade its processor ONLY up to the level that the motherboard supports. BUT graphics will not improve much.
The old Celerons are HOTTER than new ones. You could consider a laptop cooler for it; something like this:

Hi. Most laptops run the CPU at a slower speed than published to help keep heat to a minimum. If your harddrive has more than about 60% of it's capacity used then a larger drive MAY speed things up. There are laptop coolers to help with heat buildup, but I use a cutting board the same size as the computer to keep some ventilation space.

first viao has a better proccecer and u old gateway has a slower 1. 2nd the ram is different for both of them the gate way is ddr and the viao id ddr2 which i faster. 3rd getting a new hard drive will do nothing at all. 4th sell the gateway and get 2gbs for ur viao.

there shouldnt be a concern as long as your laptop helps it. there is not any draw backs reason you would be utilising an identical speed. in case you have 3 gigs of ram you wont could desire to enhance your ram for a whilst. so because it quite is a plus
