i've got used all 3 classes over the path of a number of years, and that i've got been with Kaspersky for the previous 3 years. i discover it greater suitable to the two Avast! and Avira. gmail IM doesn't require any download. As soon as you log into your gmail account, it shows you other gmail users in your address book who are online and allows you to IM them.
If you want to use the voice-enabled features, however, you still need to download gtalk.
