OK this is a 1997 toyota corolla with about 93,000 miles on it. The mechanic told me first I neeed to replace the distrubotor for about $348 labor and all now he is saying it is the distrubtor and it's housing whatever that means for $758. I hope this new info helps with someone helping me thanks.

first of you distibutor is a single peace unit ie. apart from the internal machinery and the cap it is sold as one unit there is no seperate housing as it attaches directly to the engine with one bolt
it certainly should not cost over 300 dollars to change as it is a 10 minute job
i suggest that you get the car looked at by an independant specialist as it sounds like you are getting screwed

it doesnt matter how long it actually takes to change it. If their flat rate book says it takes 6 hours to do it and they do it in 10 minutes your still paying them for the 6 hours... its lame but true. your distributer is only a single piece but if he is counting your coil and cap and rotor i guess thats a housing but that shouldn't add on that much for a cap and rotor.

take the car to some one you can trust and have them check it out since distribute rs do not usu alley go bad only the parts in them.good luck.
