I have looked up the specs on your computer and you can not upgrade to a core duo. The socket (where the processor plugs in) is the wrong type. The kind you have has 478 pins to plug in. The core duo has over 700 pins to plug into the motherboard.
The spec sheet said that your computer only came with 512 MB in memory. It does say that your computer will handle up to 4 GB in memory. My suggestion to you is: about all you can do at this point is upgrade your memory. It may not make everything run faster, but will have an effect on a lot of programs you may run.

I bulid high end gaming desktops. And the phrase "you get what you pay for" is the honest truth.
Have a great day

yes it will make a huge difference but i dont think u have the right socket. the c2ds have a lga775 socket. I think the 8400s are 2 old 2 have that socket type. Make sure u have the right socket type u cant just put ne processor in it. If u do put a c2d in it make sure u have loads of ram to equal it out. U would probly need a new motherboard and dell cases are proprietary so u would prbly need a whole new case as well. So just save ur money and buy a new computer

It depends on what you use your PC for. But your motherboard can't take any dual-core CPUs, not even the old Pentium dual cores.

But adding this RAM would make a HUGE difference in how it performs:

single center processors are old. in case you want genuine overall performance purchase a sparkling computing gadget with a twin or greater useful quad center processor. countless new video games won't even play on a single center processor and those that play are very sluggish and virtually unplayable.
