One word of caution: This is not a good time to visit the Laredo/Nuevo Laredo area
as extremely dangerous conditions prevail in those cities at this time due to violent drug wars. So don't visit the "streets of Laredo" just right now.

Hey, Texas is a big place. Exactly where are you going in Texas?
If you are in San Antonio, the Alamo is fun. And a lot of ppl slobber over the 'River Walk' about what a great place that is.
If you're in Midland, The CAF museum, featuring stuff about World War 2 airplanes is really good; I've been there.
Houston? The traffic can be a real meat grinder.
Well, what ever you decide on, good luck.
Oh, and one more thing; In Corpus Christy there is a World War 2 aircraft carrier where you can go on 'self guided' tours. The boat had been in battles where a bunch of sailors died. I took a self guided tour by myself all down through out the boat hoping to run into a ghost at some point, but I never did.

You do realize that Texas is a VERY large state, right? It isn't like New Jersey, where you can drive from one end to the other in two hours. Try 850 miles from west to east and nearly as far from north to south.
If you are going to Houston, go see Space Center
If you are going to Dallas, go see Dealey Plaza (and the grassy knoll).
If you are going to San Antonio, go see the Alamo.
If you are going to Fort Worth, go see the downtown area, which is very picturesque.
If going to Waco, go somewhere else.
If you are going to Austin, go see the Capitol building (taller than the one in DC), Zilker Park (naked sunning coeds), or the clocktower.
If you are going to Galveston, see Moody Gardens and the Strand.
If you are going to El Paso, look over the fence into Mexico.
If you are going to Laredo, see Nuevo Laredo.
That's just a start.

for one day? What area? Texas is huge...really huge. You could spend a week in San Antonio alone. Narrow down your search for better results.

The Alamo.
Pee Wee Herman couldn't find the basement and Ozzy Osbourne peed on it.
