Six months ago I purchased a Holden Vectra 2000 model. 2.2 litre four cylinder 5 speed manual. The car has done 78 000km and has been maintained perfectly.

The car was/is still driving beautifullly. About 3 weeks ago the instruments on the dashboard (speedo. tacho etc) were momentarily failing and then returning to normal. When this happened the check engine light would also flash.

This happened every couple of days and I have been unable to notice any other common patterns. This is now happening more frequently and the check engine light is staying on for longer.
PLEASE HELP

In the back of the dash cluster is a little device called a votage stabilizer, this controls the inflow of power to all the instruments, when this starts to fail the cluster starts to do all sorts of wacky things just as you have described.
It is not a job you can do yourself, Take it to an auto elec to have him take a look.

A newer vehicle like yours will have an ecu(electronic control unit) which controls the running of the vehicle in areas such as ignition and sensor's etc. For each fault there is a diagnostic code. To get this code you need a code reader which plugs into your car. Obviously not many people have these devices but a mechanic should. Once the problem is fixed and the code is cleared the check engine light should turn off.
