i think a lot of people don't think things through, they just give an emotive reaction to life's problems. Chuck them all is jail seems like a practical response (and a vote winner for politicians) but costs society a fortune in more ways than one (in financial terms, and because it usually makes the people worse). People also think they shouldn't subsidise child care (e.g., through taxes) but the alternative is to pay single parents benefits for years which ends up costing more.

Perhaps you are not doing yourself justice when you try to explain this because there is no pertinent relationship between the two. One is an absolute must where if jails do not receive the proper funding, actually, they too are white elephants and the result is an amplification not a diminution. In other words, we have to pay to keep dangerous people off the streets since they leave no alternative, yet where they put them is just a lesson in futility to the most maximum level, and to change it and make it right we will have to rid ourselves of the unions that need prisoners to make a living off and they need us to believe we cant do without them etc etc on down the long dark stairway to the socially supported pits.
It is hard to get anyone to relate jails and funding to benefits and the funding that is voluntary sort of. I mean, if it doesn't get funded perhaps the results are unavoidable suffering due to the lack of it but so ambiguous. When I'm told I should fork out more money to benefit or other like pensions etc I have a choice and if I decide not to the results are not directly in my face forcing me into a corner like criminals (some) do.

Jails are funded to separate the predators from the public at large. It is necessary and a good thing in an orderly democratic society. It is grossly abused because so many people locked up do not have to be. It is just that the courts and the DA's and the police do not have the imagination to devise a humane approach to non-violent crime. Also none of them have the balls to look "weak" to the public. Again, Political Correctness wreaks lives.
Benefits are to go only to the truly needy - aged, disabled, children in need (not their parents) etc. Anyone not mentally ill (they get SSI/SSA) or physically incapacitated (same) can work for a living, therefore not eligible for or needing benefits. Benefits are the most "stolen" item in our democratic, PC society. Most people who apply for "benefits" are cheaters, lazy, drug addicted, no imagination losers. Currently, the illegal alien population comes here with full knowledge (via their corrupt government) of the "benefits." Since few of them under 60 are actually married with children, it is a matter of guys screwing hundreds of willing women and teens who get pregnant each year and pop out an 'anchor baby.' All to get "benefits." Illegal aliens get an average of $20 - $30 per hour in "benefits." Legal citizens get about $5. Citizens pay for the invaders in their taxes and other ways. Illegal aliens, particularly from Mexico, are a cancer that is being allowed to grow for reasons no one really understands. It is going to lead to riots in the street and mass killings very soon. Stupid government is responsible but no one knows why they would go in a direction that only one with a gun to their head would go.

I've never broken the law or sponged off of the state so I'm not willing to fund either, but unfortunately we don't have a choice, different for people who genuinely need benefit like the disabled

Because benefits offer no tangible results. You build a jail you can see it, see the bad people being separated from society it makes us all feel safer, and thats all we can do. No one can solve all the world's problems, feed the whatever and clothe the who-gives-a-crap, its not possible, forget it, dream on. We can however put people in prison and give ourselves the illusion of justice. Which is enough for most, but someone always wants more. Gimmie, gimmie gimmie!

Many think that people on benefits are scroungers but although there are some, a lot people are genuine.
I remember being in a queue and paying for my milk with tokens. The woman behind said, " I wish I got my milk free, lazed around all day and didn't have to go to work". I offered to swop with her but she declined when she realised she would have to have the reason for my being on benefits - cancer and numerous operations and chemo etc.

Because funding jails is their way of keeping certain people from advancing and progressing to better things which would threaten them.

People are fed up with thugs, getting their homes broken into, windows broken, shop owners being attacked and beaten, and all the crime that is going on. I would willingly
pay for more jails and I would throw in plenty of birches as well.
Do I sound angry yes I am for the kids who are being shot for nothing.
