Harvestmen live in large fields, not actually spiders but arachnids with only a cephalothorax and ont an abdomen. They set up webs in various places, and wait for insects to meander aimlessly into them. Harvestmen, or daddy longlegs, supposedly have more venom than any spider in the WORLD. Only problem is, their fangs are so small that they cannot bite humans. They, in fact, are very gentle with humans, like a butterfly or a moth is. Some species of harvestmen have frightening appearances, ranging from brown to jet black with glimmering white stripes. They sometimes live in colonies. They will also hunt for their food. You can sometimes go out to a field in the country, and see a harvestmen stalking across the tips of the grass blades, searching for means of food, and possibly shelter. They serve as food for birds, and they eat other insects, and do not pose a threat to man-kind. Although, one person supposedly tried desperately to get the harvestman angry enough to bite him, but the harvestman couldn't inject its deadly venom.

If you are talking about the long-legged insect with wings, they bounce around and bump into things. [If they have 8 legs and no wings, they are not so bouncy and they eat bugs, pretty much like a spider.] Then they mate and lay eggs in the ground. Some of them drink nectar, some don't bother because their life is too short.
The eggs in the ground hatch into a larva called a leatherjacket. It is kind of reddish brown and leathery looking, and lives underground eating a few roots until it is old enough to metamorphose into a crane fly.
Some species of crane flies can become so numerous that the leatherjackets actually damage the lawn, and it turns brown in spots. Others don't eat enough to hurt anything.
Some spiders and birds and reptiles will eat them.
That's what they do and what they're for.

Why should they have a 'place', a justificatory role, in the world ? Natural selection just favours those that are adapted to survive. Daddy Long Legs have this adaptation. So do we : and what's our place in the world except to destroy it ?

Actually Daddy Long Legs eat spiders. And spiders send me screaming like a little girl, so they are okay in my book, just as long as they keep away from me.
