Is emo short for emotion and you cut your self b/c of depression and goth wear all black to get attention? my cousin thinks its the other way around! He tells me i wouldn't know b/c im preppy(not true i just wear pink and crud like that) can you help me settle this?

Emo is short for emotional rock. It is a whole 'look' associated with wrist cutting, teenage angst, body piercing, tortured souls brought out in the form of poetry or really bad art, and basically whiny little kids who shun anything 'preppy' because that is 'conformist'. Unfortunately they don't see how they all dress the same in their Hot Topic safety pins and stupid-looking black girl jeans. As the Emo Kid song goes, "I'm just a bad, cheap imitation of goth."
Goth has been around since the 70s with the arrival of Souxsie and the Banshees, and it involves a fascination with life and death or an afterlife. It used to be called 'positive punk' because goth was less in-your-face and apparently more positive than punk rock. I like them better because they're not always up in your face calling you a conformist.
As for 'hardcore', don't even bother with that. The whole genre is full of people saying "I'm hardcore" then someone else saying "no you're not, I am!" It's impossible to tell what is hardcore because people are constantly dissing each other and telling everyone that THEY are the real thing. lol. just be preppy or whatever and proud! if you are preppy, you are a non-conformist!

not all emo's cut and not all cutters are emo... both emo and goth are basically fashion styles tho some want to think that it also reflects emotions... emos r depressed and goths are indifferent or angered at the world. that sort of thing... don't believe it... being goth or emo varies too. i wear alot of black and other stuff but am i goth or emo? i also wear other stuff... there are no clear cut lines to being emo or goth...
an emo to the stereotypical world is someone who is very depressed, pracitices self mutilation, and wants to die... a goth is someone who is either indifferent or is angry at the world, wears alot of black and has unusual piercings... let ppl believe what they want

in my opinion emo is just a rip off of goth and most (not all) emos that cut just do it for attention and that pisses me off and i'm goth and i dont dress the way i do to get attention, and i'm not angry at the world, i mean sure i have the people that i dont like and all of that but that doesnt mean that i hate everyone.
