Go to a career counselor and take some aptitude tests. This will determine your strengths and weaknesses. You might be surprised. Another option, look at the categories that you tend to browse on Answers. This might reveal to you some of your true interests that you may be unaware of. I hope you find your calling. Good Luck.

Actually this falls within the realm of transactional analysis. It is called... "what do you do after you have said hello?" That lull in conversation where many people feel they are dorks for not knowing how to structure their time and worst of all feel somewhat uncomfortable not having something to say so they fall into some sort of repeat statement until the other party comes along and goes back into the interchange of verbal and non verbal stimulation.
This is a good moment to recapitulate and get used to the inner quiet that accompanies a moment where the activity has hit a space where nothing is happening. Perhaps if more were to try to get used to it. What do I do when I don't know what to do in life? All I can say is that for me that moment is in no need of structuring beyond enjoyment of the plenitude of the moment. So, in other words, the moment that I do not know what to do in life can be put another way... It is a moment in life, where my activity is "not having anything that I usually do at the moment" even though for me I'm fine with it.

I tend to leave it for a while, and do something I know I enjoy doing. Sometimes that is getting fit and staying fit, and sometimes that is making some fruit wines and beers and then drinking them. Ultimately, if there is a solution to a problem it will come eventually. If there is nothing you can do to solve the problem, then the best thing you can do is something else which you enjoy doing.

Sometimes I decide that a problem is too difficult to solve, so I leave it. A week, month, year, decade or so on later I suddenly have a moment of inspiration which allows me to solve that problem which I found so difficult.

Skiing was my answer in 2002. I'm quite good at skiing now, and I still enjoy skiing as much as I did when I first went skiing. I have many other hobbies and interests as well, and that is what I do when I don't know what to do.

I just figured out what I wanted to do in my life. In between then and now, I had children, I got married, I worked at crappy paying jobs, then it hit me.

Earlier in life, I thought that I wanted to be a doctor, so I went to university and started pre-med courses. But I found out that there was another part of the world that I didn't know about, and I searched it.

Now that I have settled down, I had to be reasonable, so I went back to school. I now take university classes via distant education. That means that I never have to leave my house and I never have to attend the university. I do everything at home. This works great for me because my children are in school and it is great to sit down with them and me do my homework, and I teach the kids as well.

I am going to be 36 soon, so it took me sometime. But it will eventually come to you. Trust me. It will.

Make a list of the things you wanted to do. Do some of them to develop new experiences, and when it comes to an occupation, whatever makes the most money and requires the least output. Jobs are not always about loving work, reality is you have to put grub on the table. Flip a coin the rest of the time.

When this experience occurs I call them moments of 'voids'

I will usually stop and not think on it for a time and eventually I somehow will 'find it'

It depends on what your meaning in your question.

If it is a career issue: what is it you enjoy doing or have an interest in.

Then go and research it in depth

Get a job that's interesting to you. You will find that perhaps in latter years. I know you are anxious but it will come in time. Try to learn as much as you can, but don't be disappointed when it takes a little more time to have this wonderful, interesting job. Good Luck!
