I frequent this bar several times a week with friends and dates. 3 months ago I noticed 12 very small cameras were installed coming through the drop ceiling and concealed in those little black half spheres so you can't tell where they're pointed. This I have no problem with as it keeps employees honest and documents everything in case a crime occurs, etc. Last night I was there talking to the bartender about the new security. She leaned over and whispered that the owner also installed microphones in the ceilings capable of capturing any conversation in the place. She told me about the recordings he let her listen to of the more funny conversations that occurred. I didn't let on, but I was outraged! My friends and dates have talked about very private things in the past couple of months when no one was in earshot. Now I find out he has been secretly recording us?? There are no signs indicating this is going on, and the microphones are not visible. Is this legal in the state of PA?

I know cameras are legal most anywhere, except restrooms or places where people change clothes. I don't know about microphones, but if they are legal, they shouldn't be. I really think there are federal laws against bugging conversations without a warrant issued by a judge for cause. Ask an attorney.

I'm not familiar with PA law, but generally, the concept of 'reasonable expectation of privacy' applies. In a public bar, it in not reasonable to expect privacy.
