Special Delivery has two benefits. First, it is a guaranteed next working day delivery, but only from when the item is posted. If you were paying a third party at 5.0 pm it is likely that they would not post until the following morning, and the guarantee would run from then. Second is security. The SD item is signed for within the mail system every time it changes hands. The postman who collects it from the PO signs for a sealed bag which contains these items, and from there on it is signed for all the way until you sign for it upon delivery. That is why it costs more and why the compensation offered if it does get lost is that much higher.
