I've had my car parked for almost two years. It's a VW Jetta. Obviously, it won't start. But I've heard that it's dangerous to try to start it if it's been parked this long. What should I do? Is my only option to have it towed to a mechanic for inspection of the engine, oil, etc. etc.? I don't think I should try to jump it.

Charge, or more likely replace the battery. Check the fluid levels. Cycle the key on and off 5 times without turning the engine over, and wait 10 seconds with the key in the run position each time. Try to start the car. Most likely it will run roughly when it starts, as the fuel is old. When the engine is running, try to drive the car. You may feel some resistance, as the brakes will have rusted.

Fill the fuel tank with fresh gas. If the gas in your area does not contain ethanol, add a can of dry gas to the tank. Drive the car slowly at first, testing the brakes to be sure they are working correctly.

Have the oil changed, and the belts and hoses inspected and replaced if needed. Inspect the tires for cracks, sitting is not good for rubber.

If you tow the car to a mechanic, the first thing they will do is jump start it to see what needs to be done. If you can get it running yourself, and drive it to be checked over, you will save the tow bill.

AS LONG AS IT NOT FROZEN YOU SHOULD NOT HAVE ANY TROUBLE. I WOULD CHARGE THE BATTERY INSTEAD OF JUMPING IT.
